Seems like there is still alot of love around for the venerable old 240, as in I don't know too many people that actually hate the car. Usually there is a version for everyone. There were a ton of workhorse and special models that show how versatile that car really could be. Let's see if I don't miss any.

Kinja'd!!!

1. Volvo Ambulance - like a Swedish Miller-Meteor ambulance

Kinja'd!!!

2. Volvo 240 Police - wouldn't call it US pursuit worthy due to it's anemic nature (till the Turbo's came out), but it was popular over there. Sedan and wagon models available

Kinja'd!!!

3. 245 Transfer - just like your mom's, but improved with more length

Kinja'd!!!

4. 240 Taxi - you figure it out

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

5. 264 Top Executive - stretch, seats 6 in comfort. Popular if your country was ruled by a Party, so you didn't have to be seen supporting a certain country. Sweden wasn't that one. PRV V6 powered

Kinja'd!!!

6. Volvo "Disabled Driver's Car" - they said it, not me. Not sure a 2 door would be the ideal body style, but it worked for this guy

Kinja'd!!!

7. Volvo Hearse - for that final run in a Volvo. Look at that piece of glass in the rear...

Kinja'd!!!

8. 262C Bertone coupe - sold over here, but still limited so I felt it had to be included. Body by Bertone. Rust under the vinyl roof, guaranteed

9. 1983 flat nose turbo Group A homologation special - couldn't find a brochure shot for this, but 500 produced

Kinja'd!!!

10. 262GL - Exceedingly rare PRV powered 2 door. I have heard much rarer than the 262C

Any I missed? I left the 242GT off of here just because it seemed too high of production, though still awesome

Thanks to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for keeping those old ads alive on the web

I approve. I'd like to think I come from the land of 240's- Ithaca NY- the OG hippy town saturated with college professors (Ithaca College and Cornell constitute over half the population) and people who hated driving/ wanted something safe before Subaru Foresters/ Outbacks took over. You can not go a day without seeing at least 3 240's or without having rode in one during your youth. I just swooned over a mint MMMINT forest green '94 240 yesterday at the local volvo dealer. The most variety I have ever experienced are the coupes and recently a 242GT in a Volvo yard I discovered. The mighty old, bearded, prospector lookin' owner dude of said Volvo yard raced a 122 until he crashed it last season at Watkins Glen. Amazing variety the town is trying to get rid of it because its along the pretty wine-trail up Seneca lake but its a jalop's paradise. MGB GT's, 1st gen Jaaag's, three VW buses, an Original Honda Civic the list goes on...

yeah I think Ithaca (which was almost my alma mater) has the second highest concentration of 240's, behind Northampton MA. Nice town there, and I remember it being exactly as you describe it with cars

Ever been to Portland, OR? I swear every other car is a 240 of some variety.

I have not, merely Seattle. People tell me its similar. ..'umpt square miles surrounded by reality' an all that. I watch the hilarity of Portlandia, which really makes me want to visit cuz i can draw on a ton of similarities...I should probably just live there.

#6 Disabled car.

I think the point is that the 242 has wider doors so it's easier to get in and out of. Once you've gotten into the car and the seat properly adjusted the collapsed wheelchair would fit behind the seat. The concept didn't seem to catch on though, as I haven't seen it since. Although there aren't much 2-door sedans either.

my 95 lb greyhound respectfully disagrees it is easier to get in and out of (only reason I sold that thing of beauty, has gone to seed since in some hippy's hands)

The door is wider on a 242 than a 244/245. It's easier to get in the front seats (if you can open the doors fully), but harder to get in the rear seats.

I see how your dog would struggle though, but you can't really compare a dog to a disabled person.

These cars were far more unique, with two doors on one side and a single on the other.

The Group A car really is gorgeous. I would never have picked Volvo bricks to age so gracefully, but against modern cars they just look better every year. Like many vehicles of this vintage, in particular the 911, I really notice how the pillars are narrower and look far more elegant than those on modern vehicles.

I ran across a Bertone Coupe, #8, rotting in the woods when searching for another type of Volvo. The property owner let me scavenge around some vehicles she had laying around, and this one caught my eye. Of course there was rust under the vinyl, and she clearly knew what she had sitting there. I tried to make an offer, but that one was off the table. It's a shame, cause it didn't look like it had too much time sitting out there under all those pine trees.

You forgot the Volvo-built 240 Shooting brake

Kinja'd!!!

One of the last 240s off the production line.

Also, slightly off topic, but I saw an interview with Gayle Banks where he noted that the $$ and oxygen sensor data gained from the Volvo 240 turbo was used to design the Buick Turbo V6 that would later become the Grand National. Long journey, but interesting to know that 2 oft he most boule boxes of the 80s were casually connected.

Yes, there was a fleet of Volvo police cars in the United States. Richardson (Texas) Police Department evaluated a few of them in 1983-1984 for a several months.

They were pure terror on North Collin Boulevard south of Campbell Drive, pouncing on the speeders and eating them for lunch.

A side note: Highland Parks (in Dallas, Texas) once had a 1982 Mercedes-Benz 240D in its fleet. Not popular with the residents who felt the tax money would be better used elsewhere.

I one new a guy with one arm, he'd lost his left arm in a work accident. He use to cruise around in a RHD Volvo 240 with a manual. What a site, seeing him change gears with his right arm going across his body.

I can't really find a lot of info. Either Volvo had an incredible sens of humor, of the workers manages to cobble something together out of spares as they wound down the line.

It does have short lead time on the door in Swedish and my experience with Scandinavians is that they would hand weld the pats if they could just for the fun of it. Since there was no 2door frame AT&T he end of the run, grafting a wagon back onto the 2 front doors of a 4dr chassis woud certainly present a few problems. (Custom driveshaft and exhaust).

That said, a SWB varint would likely be a quite a twitchy donut machine.
